The Full Text of US President Barack Obama‘s statement on Osama bin Laden’s death

 

    "Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the 

world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin 

Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, and a terrorist who‘s responsible for the murder 

of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.

   "It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the 

worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are 

seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless 

September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing 

up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 

where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and 

destruction.

   "And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the 

world. The empty seat at the dinner table. Children who were forced to grow up 

without their mother or their father. Parents who would never know the feeling 

of their child’s embrace. Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping 

hole in our hearts.

   "On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came 

together. We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our 

blood. We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and 

country. On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or 

what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.

   "We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring 

those who committed this vicious attack to justice. We quickly learned that the 

9/11 attacks were carried out by Al-Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama 

bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed 

to killing innocents in our country and around the globe. And so we went to war 

against Al-Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.

   "Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our 

military and our counterterrorism professionals, we‘ve made great strides in 

that effort. We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland 

defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin 

Laden and Al-Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with 

our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of Al-Qaeda terrorists, 

including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.

   "Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border 

into Pakistan. Meanwhile, Al-Qaeda continued to operate from along that border 

and operate through its affiliates across the world.

   "And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director 

of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our 

war against Al-Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, 

dismantle, and defeat his network.

   "Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence 

community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from 

certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly 

with my national security team as we developed more information about the 

possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside 

of Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough 

intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden 

and bring him to justice.

   "Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation 

against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans 

carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No 

Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a 

firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

   "For over two decades, bin Laden has been Al-Qaeda‘s leader and symbol, and 

has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. 

The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our 

nation’s effort to defeat Al-Qaeda.

   "Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. There‘s no doubt that 

Al-Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must -- and we will -- 

remain vigilant at home and abroad.

   "As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not -- and never 

will be -- at war with Islam. I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did 

shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a 

Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, Al-Qaeda has 

slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his 

demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.

   "Over the years, I‘ve repeatedly made clear that we would take action 

within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was. That is what we’ve done. But 

it‘s important to note that our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan 

helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding. Indeed, bin 

Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against 

the Pakistani people.

   "Tonight, I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with 

their Pakistani counterparts. They agree that this is a good and historic day 

for both of our nations. And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan 

continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.

   "The American people did not choose this fight. It came to our shores, and 

started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens. After nearly 10 years of 

service, struggle, and sacrifice, we know well the costs of war. These efforts 

weigh on me every time I, as Commander-in-Chief, have to sign a letter to a 

family that has lost a loved one, or look into the eyes of a service member 

who’s been gravely wounded.

   "So Americans understand the costs of war. Yet as a country, we will never 

tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have 

been killed. We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends 

and allies. We will be true to the values that make us who we are. And on 

nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to 

Al-Qaeda‘s terror: Justice has been done.

   "Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism 

professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome. The American 

people do not see their work, nor know their names. But tonight, they feel the 

satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.

   "We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they 

exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those 

who serve our country. And they are part of a generation that has borne the 

heaviest share of the burden since that September day.

   "Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we 

have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do 

whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.

   "And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 

9/11. I know that it has, at times, frayed. Yet today‘s achievement is a 

testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American 

people.

   "The cause of securing our country is not complete. But tonight, we are 

once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is 

the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our 

people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to 

stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer 

place.

   "Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or 

power, but because of who we are: one nation, under God, indivisible, with 

liberty and justice for all.

   "Thank you. May God bless you. And may God bless the United States of 

America."

오늘 나는 수 천명의 무고한 남녀와 어린이의 목숨을 앗아간 테러분자, 알-카에다의 리더 빈 라덴을 제거하는 작전을 수행한 사실을 미국인과 전 세계에 보고할 수 있게 됐다.

약 10년전 9월의 화창한 날은 미 역사상 최악의 공격에 의해 어둠에 빠졌다. 9.11의 장면은 우리 전 국민의 기억 속에 각인돼 있다. 쌍둥이 빌딩의 붕괴, 연기가 솟아나는 펜타곤, 펜실베이니아 생스빌에 떨어진 비행기의 잔해...그 중에서도 최악의 장면은 세상에서 사라진 사람들이다. 식탁의 빈자리, 부모없이 성장해야 하는 아이들이다. 미국인 약 3천명이 희생돼, 우리의 가슴 속에 커다란 구멍을 남겼다. 그 사건 이후 미국은 미국인과 동맹국을 보호하기 위해 알-카에다와 전쟁에 돌입했으며 지칠줄 모르는 우리 군과 대테러 전문가들의 영웅적인 노력에 힘입어 테러시도들을 막아냈고 국토방위가 강화됐으며 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반을 축출하고 알-카에다 요원 수 십명을 체포하거나 사살했다.

그러나 빈 라덴은 추적을 피해 국경 산악지대를 지나 파키스탄으로 피신했다. 알-카에다는 국경지대에서 활동을 지속하는 한편 전 세계 지부를 통한 활동도 계속했다.


나는 취임 직후 리언 파네타 중앙정보국(CIA) 국장에게 빈 라덴 생포 또는 사살을 알-카에다와 전쟁에서 최우선 순위로 하도록 지시했다.

지난해 8월 몇년간 피땀흘린 추적 끝에 정보당국이 빈 라덴의 은신처에 대한 믿을 만한 정보를 파악해 보고했다. 이후 몇달간 착착 정보를 추적해나갔다. 정보당국은 빈 라덴이 파키스탄 깊숙한 곳에 은신하고 있을 가능성을 파악했다. 마침내 지난주에 행동에 돌입할 만큼 충분한 정보를 확보했다는 결론을 내리고 빈 라덴을 잡아 정의의 심판을 받게 하는 작전을 승인했다.

오늘 미국은 내 지시에 따라 파키스탄 아보타바드에 있는 빈 라덴 근거지를 목표로 한 작전을 수행했다. 소규모 팀이 뛰어난 용기와 능력으로 작전을 수행했다. 미국인 부상자는 없다. 민간인 희생을 피하기 위해 신경을 썼다. 교전 후 작전팀이 빈 라덴을 사살했고 시신을 확보했다.

빈 라덴은 지난 20년 이상 알-카에다의 리더이자 상징 역할을 했다. 빈 라덴 사살은 알-카에다와 싸움에서 최대의 성과다.

부시 대통령도 9.11 직후 말했듯이 미국은 이슬람과 전쟁을 하는 것이 아니며 그렇게 하지도 않을 것임을 분명히 밝힌다. 빈 라덴은 무슬림 리더가 아니라 무슬림의 대량 살상자다. 빈 라덴 제거는 평화주의자와 인권주의자라면 환영할 일이다. 빈 라덴을 추적하는 데는 파키스탄의 협조가 중요한 역할을 했다. 오늘 밤에 자르다리 파키스탄 대통령에게 전화를 걸었고 안보팀도 파키스탄 당국자와 대화를 했다. 오늘은 양국 모두에 기쁘고 역사적인 날이라는 데 뜻을 같이했다. 알-카에다와의 싸움에서 파키스탄과 공조는 필수적이다.


이 싸움은 미국이 시작한 게 아니라 (테러 세력이) 미국에 와서 미국인을 무참히 살해한 데서 시작됐다. 우리는 전쟁에 대가가 따른다는 점을 알지만 국가로서 미국은 안보위협을 용인하지 않을 것이며 자국민 희생을 방관하지 않을 것이다. 우리는 오늘 날의 미국을 만든 가치에 충실해야 할 것이다. 그래야 오늘 같은 날, 우리는 알-카에다에게 사랑하는 이를 잃은 가족에게 ‘정의가 이뤄졌다’고 말할 수 있다.

마지막으로 9.11 때 사랑하는 이를 잃은 가족들에게 우리는 희생을 잊은 적이 없으며 모든 수단을 동원해 미국 본토에 대한 공격을 막겠다는 약속을 져버리지 않겠다고 말씀드린다.

오늘 밤 우리는 9.11 당시의 단합된 정신을 상기하자. 이번 빈 라덴 제거 작전 성공은 미국의 위대함과 미국인의 굳은 결의를 보여주는 증거다. 오늘 우리는 미국인은 무엇이든 결심한 바를 해내고야 만다는 것을 다시 느꼈다. 우리가 이런 일들을성취할 수 있는 것은 부와 힘 때문이 아니라, 하늘 아래 분열하지 않는 하나의 나라, 모두가 자유와 정의를 누리는 미국인이기 때문이다.
